Highlights from this year’s conference:

  • Two inspiring keynote addresses: Urvashi Rangan, Director of Technical Policy for Consumers Union, discussed the increased public awareness of how our food is grown and how consumers can decipher confusing food labels. Tom Stearns, founder of Vermont-based High Mowing Seeds, focused on the need to build healthier, regional food systems through collaboration among farmers, businesses and their communities.
  • Introduction of the Young Organic Stewards program: developed to address the needs of young aspiring farmers, and lay the foundation for the next generation of sustainable and organic agriculture.

Keynote and Featured Speakers

Martin and Atina Diffley, Organic FarmingWorks, LLC, Farmington, MN Martin and Atina founded Gardens of Eagan, one of the longest-certified vegetable operations in the U.S., certified since 1974! They are highly respected growers renowned for their innovative marketing ideas, use and adaptation of mechanical equipment, use of cover crops, green manures and compost, and mentoring of new farmers. They also helped develop the first agricultural impact mitigation plan for public utility projects that cross organic land. The Diffleys sold Gardens of Eagan to the Wedge Cooperative in 2007 so they could focus on research, education, and consulting through their business, Organic FarmingWorks.

Lynne Rossetto Kasper, Award Winning Food Writer and Public Radio Host Lynne Rossetto Kasper has won numerous awards as host of The Splendid Table, including two James Beard Foundation Awards, three Clarion Awards from Women in Communications, and a Gracie Allen Award. Lynne is a respected authority on food, having published three bestselling books: The Splendid Table, The Italian Country Table, and The Splendid Table’s How to Eat Supper, which was coauthored with producer Sally Swift in 2008. Lynne’s syndicated column, “How To Eat Supper,” appears in 700 newspapers. The Splendid Table can be heard on more than 200 public radio stations nationwide.

George Siemon, Founder and CEO, Organic Valley Cooperative One of the nation’s foremost organic agriculture advocates for nearly 20 years, George is known for his leadership in organizing farmers and building market support for organic agriculture. A farmer himself, he joined with neighboring farm families in 1988 to found what has come to be known as Organic Valley® Family of Farms. Organic Valley now boasts more than 1,200 members and markets dairy, meat, eggs, vegetables, and other products. George and his family have owned and operated an organic farm in Wisconsin since 1977.

Jill Clapperton, principal scientist and owner of Earthspirit Land Resource Consulting, advises farmers, farm groups, and agricultural and forestry businesses internationally. While at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge Research Centre, she led studies on how soils function biologically – so that farmers could more effectively manage and benefit from the long-term biological fertility of the soil, and consumers could have mineral and nutrient-rich food grains. Jill and her family live and work in western Montana on her husband’s family ranch/tree farm.

Terry Gompert, veteran Extension Educator from Knox County, Nebraska, is widely renowned for his work with graziers and is a certified educator for Holistic Management. Terry is also a cattleman himself; he has a cow/calf operation and considers himself a low-cost producer who grazes nearly year round.

Dale Mutch is a Michigan State University Extension Specialist with more than 20 years of experience in organic farming, integrated pest management, cover crops, and sustainable agriculture. Lots of his research is “participatory,” involving teams of farmers as advisors and cooperators. Mutch manages ten OCIA-certified organic research acres. Recently, he developed no-till organic methods and an innovative way to plant cover crops by mixing the seed into a manure slurry tank and seeding the cover crop during manure application.

OEFFA’s 32nd annual conference—Inspiring Farms, Sustaining Communities— featured nationally recognized keynote speakers Joan Gussow and Klaas and Mary-Howell Martens, nearly 80 informative, hands-on workshops; a fun and educational kids’ conference.

OEFFA’s annual conference is Ohio’s largest sustainable agriculture conference.
Keynote Speakers:

Joan Gussow was one of the first persons to envision, teach, and write about a local, organic whole food system, earning her the title “matriarch of the modern day food movement.”
As one of the foremost critics of industrial agriculture, Joan has been a mentor to leaders in the local foods movement, including Barbara Kingsolver and Michael Pollan.
Joan is a highly acclaimed nutrition educator, author, Mary Swartz Rose Professor Emerita, and former chair of the Columbia University Teachers College Nutrition Department.

Klaas and Mary-Howell Martens have farmed organically since 1993 and own and operate New York’s only dedicated organic feed mill and organic seed operation.

The Martens raise about 1400 acres of corn, soybeans, small grains, and other crops as well as heifers, pigs, and chickens. Their organic grain business, Lakeview Organic Grain, was started in 1996 and has expanded to supply more than 300 organic farmers in central New York. The Martens made the transition from conventional farming to being one of the leading experts in organic production, sharing their knowledge and learning experiences in magazines such as ACRES USA and as in-demand speakers at conferences and events.

The Martens are the Northeast Region winners of the 2008 Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture. They helped found New York Certified Organic, an accredited USDA organic certification agency, and the Northeast Organic Network, which works to improve organic farmers’ access to research and technical support.

The 19th Annual Grazing Conference, hosted by GrassWorks, Inc., was held February 13-15, 2011 at Wilderness Territory Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI. The theme, “Grounded in Grazing,” reflected this year’s focus on soil as well as the down to earth nature of the event. We designated an entire track to soil issues and invited soil experts, researchers and seasoned graziers from around the region will be our guides through this vital microscopic world that is so inextricably linked to our own. Additional tracks addressed topics related to financial management, marketing/distribution, policy/program support, research and, as always, getting started in grazing. Check out the 2011 Grazing Conference Program.
